When we enter a space of grief, what do we need to do to return to a space of joy? Do we need closure? These are two of the questions I explore in a talk for TEDxDesMoines.
I invite you to watch and share your own thoughts on how we can carry joy and grief together.
Beyond Closure – The Space Between Joy and Grief
Some thoughts and responses I have received…
This has been one the most uplifting and sympathetic words I have heard since I lost my sweet husband 42 days ago. I am crying so much right now because I have the feeling of being understood completely! Thank you so much!

I wish everyone could listen to this video. It says so much about the way I feel.

I just watched your Ted Talk, and was completely moved. My son was stillborn in June of this year, and I am working on finding a place where I can carry both joy and grief with me. The end of your talk inspired me greatly, when you spoke about art and photography, and how it was the shadows that give depth and beauty. I am so thankful that I took the time to listen to your words. They will remain with me as I adventure through this life. Thank you, again and again.

As humans, we have the capacity to carry joy and grief at the same time. So what would happen, if rather than telling people to put a lid on their pain, we open the box and listen to people’s stories.
Please share your story below.

Dear Nancy,
Thank you for so eloquently expressing what I have felt over the loss of my husband in August. In a world of “tweets” and social media blips, I was horrified and people’s expression of my loss. I wish everyone I knew, and even those I don’t, could hear your words. I begged to be witnessed for where I was/am, but virtually no one knew or knows how to do that. Everyone wants me in a box so that they aren’t discomforted. I posted this to FB and sent the link to all of those I know who I don’t relate to on FB.
My most heartfelt thanks,
Marilynn

While desperately searching the Internet for comforting information and videos after I lost my beloved wife to cancer, I came across your touching, helpful, and still very relevant video. I have begun sharing it with all the grief-adjacent people I know who just don’t have any idea how to approach grief and the grief stricken. Thank you.
