As we get closer to September 11, we will hear more about the 9/11 attacks. The tenth anniversary of this tragedy will be remembered differently depending on your own connection to the events. If you lost a loved one in the attacks, your grief and memories will be more difficult than what most may experience. Some people will solemnly reflect on the day. Others will go the extra step to thank firefighters, police, and military personnel for their services in responding to the attacks that day and since. Then there are those who see the tenth anniversary of 9/11 as a chance to sell souvenirs.
There is a growing range of products on the market as we approach the tenth anniversary. You can buy mugs, t-shirts, postcards, and even doggie shirts that have the dates: 9-11-01 and 5-01-11 with the words “Finally Closure” in the middle. The implication is that since Osama bin Laden’s death (5-01-11) we should now have “closure” to the 9/11 attacks.
Other souvenirs have the themes “Never Forget” or “We Will Always Remember.” These messages are usually accompanied by pictures of the Twin Towers or some other 9/11-related image. Available for purchase are t-shirts, jackets, sweatshirts, buttons, hats, and underwear. That’s right, underwear.
Women’s thongs and men’s boxers are sporting 9/11 messages.
We live in a culture of consumerism so it is not especially surprising that people are selling 9/11 products. Still, there is a jarring disconnect when picturing some families remembering and grieving the tragic losses from those attacks while others are commemorating the event by sitting around in 9/11-themed underwear.
